But, since Dell limits people's access to other operating systems, the operating system market is now not free. Since Dell offers certain support services along with their computers which other companies don't, they are often chosen over other companies by consumers, and consumers and Dell both benefit (which is a demonstration of how the free market is helpful). If a certain situation is making it more difficult for certain businesses to enter the market, then it is not truly free, and it is the responsibility of the government to level the playing field. And they'll be the new MS.Įxactly, and it is the job of the government to maintain that free market. And ya know, they'll do that by taking the time to develop solutions with other guys at other companies that allow them both to make money. when some company finds a way to make money by making linux a good mainstream OS that even grandma can use. ![]() There is a reason OS X is built on UNIX and there is a reason Vista has borrowed heavily from the security model that UNIX/Linux have had for years. and she mentioned a nice young gentleman over in russia who was helping her figure out how to break the drm on blu-ray so she could get her HD on. She mentioned that she was just about to start a new project recompiling her core to get better performance out of the system so it would be setup for h.264 decoding. Her and her quilt group were having a big discussion about how much better mplayer was than xine. A LOT of work has been done on Linux, it's GUIs (KDE and Gnome), apps, and drivers. Re: the OpenOffice/Linux doubters- 1999 called and wants it's Linux stereotypes & misconceptions back. The latest Ubuntu to be released this month is more exciting to me than any OS to date.Īnd Beryl/Compviz (Linux Aero) should be installed by default in the Fall 2007 Ubuntu release- not that I'd use it, but more to answer the Aero advocates. Progress implies a free market to enable competition and choice. A hungry lawyer somewhere *really* needs to slam the Dells and HP's of the world with a class action on the forced OS issue. Why can't you pull down the OS menu when configuring a PC at the Dell's or HP.com's of the world, letting you select XP Pro, Xp Home, Ubuntu Linux, Free-DOS, or other distros/OS's? I'd be happy if they even let you select just the XP options, in addition to Vista. Prior to 1995 and Win95, you could choose the OS you wanted on your PC- heck, in the early 90's and before, most PC's came with *no* OS- you bought the boxed DOS, DR-DOS, GeoWorks, Novell Netware, OS/2 or whatever you wanted for your OS. How quickly everyone forgot how the value of the PC platform was in its ability to use commodity components and *any* OS or software the user wants. ![]() Or Directx over OpenGL which can put the GPU to use better then Directx IMO. The problem here is the use of GPU over CPU. Vista Functionality found here : watch the video here which is stil in betaĪlthough Beryl is not for XP it's still better IMO: Beryl or watch the Video HereĪll of this (except for 3dflip) can reproduce the same eye candy as Vista without (let me repeat without) having to PAY FOR IT!!! And, from what I hear there will also be the ability to us animated wallpaper on XP which is ONLY FOUND IN vista ULTIMATE! Most if not all of Vista's eye candy can also be used in XP MS can actually check your computer and actually delete certain programs without your knowledge. Irony: Per Vista Eula "you may not work around any technical limitations in the software." Which is what most of you are doing just to get your HTPC functional. Some believe that Vista is actually worse then DRM itself. You also get a decrease in frame rate vs. No DX10 games as of yet making Vista expensive for gaming. ![]() In other words all programs and games run under XP just fine. No list of games and programs that are Vista only. There are no tangible (user capable) features that cannot be used in XP already. Expensive for normal use: If all you do is surf the web, email, and use MS Office, Vista is not an ideal solution
